What to look for in Disability Insurance?

Your contract should have an "own occupation" definition to age 65. This gives you a choice not to work in another occupation if you can no longer work in your own.
Your contract should contain a Future Earning Protection Option, giving you the ability to increase your monthly benefits regardless of changes in your health and even while you are disabled and receiving benefits. This feature goes to age 55.
Your contract should provide benefits in the event of a partial disability, assuring you that if there is any partial loss of income due to disability, you can either maintain 80% of earnings or a fixed amount. Look for a choice of either to give you better coverage.
Your contract should be guaranteed and non-cancellable to age 65. This means it cannot be cancelled or modified and the premium cannot be raised by the insurance company before age 65.
Your contract should be flexible, giving you the ability to make modifications (increase or decrease coverage) should your situation or needs change.
Your contract should allow you the ability to add options to improve you coverage such as: 1st day Benefits for Accident, Cost of Living, Health Care Rider and Critical Illness.
You should look for credibility and experience in a broker. Service, both initially and at claim time, is the most important factor for your protection when you need help. A specialist in disability insurance should always be an advantage to you.
